PRESS RELEASE

Enjoy visiting Greece, stay safe on the road!
Road safety tips for your summer vacations

The Road Safety Institute (R.S.I.) “Panos Mylonas” in cooperation with the Representation of the European Commission in Greece and under the auspices of the Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO) continues its efforts to inform citizens by creating a new campaign along with Visit Greece www.visitgreece.grin order to give road safety guidelines to both Greek and foreign drivers who will spend their holidays in our country, thus increasing the traffic on national and provincial roads.

The campaign with the key message «Enjoy visiting Greece. Stay Safe on the road!», that was broadcasted on a nationwide scale, was also communicated in the form of a double sided – both in Greek and English – leaflet that provided the reader with road safety tips for the drivers. The leaflet aims to raise awareness with a special focus on the summer months that the ratio of the traffic incidents is higher as the drivers tend to be less careful and follow risky tactics as drink and drive or driving after a long night etc.

According to the statistics of the Traffic Police for the year 2013, for the period between 20th of June to 27thof August, due to traffic incidents there were 211 dead, 280 seriously injured and 1,949 slightly injured. Such a high number indicates that about 3 people every day lose their lives due to a traffic incident during the summer period. For this reason, the R.S.I. “Panos Mylonas” in cooperation with the Members of the Alliance for Safety & Courtesy on the Road “Roads to the Future”, aims to reach out to both Greek drivers and travelers with 5 simple yet very important tips for their lives and the lives of the other road users.

In order to enhance the raising of the awareness and to reach out to a bigger portion of the population, the campaign took also the form of a poster, of a tv-spot and a radio spot. The campaign emphasizes on the use of the seatbelt, the helmet and reminds to the drivers to not use the mobile when driving and to be responsible drivers and not drink and drive and the importance of driving on a reduced speed during the summer months. The TV spot broadcasts to all digital channels of R.S.I., the Representation of the European Commission in Greece and the GNTO while the radio spot has been sent to all radio stations with the approval of the Greek National Council for Radio and Television (NCRTV).

The distribution of the 500,00 leaflets and posters is carried out by the GNTO in all Regional Tourism Offices in Greece, at the Information Office (D. Areopagitou, Akropolis), at the Greek Police in the Traffic Departments of Athens and Thessaloniki and also at the Regional Police Departments (Western Greece, Ionian Islands, Crete, South Aegean, Peloponnese, Central Greece, Ann. Macedonia and Thrace, Central Macedonia, North Aegean, Western Macedonia, Epirus and Thessaly) and at the central motorway tolls (Roupaki, western Metamorphosis, Metamorphosis eastern Katechaki Koropi) of "ATTIKI ODOS" that is a member of the Alliance for Safety & Courtesy on the Road “Roads to the Future”.

Also for those who choose to travel by plane, they can find the campaign’s leaflets at the Athens International Airport "El. Venizelos" that has posted the campaign’s posters in screens (dim. 1,2m. x 1,8m.) in various parts of the airport for the whole month of August.
