SUMMERTIME ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN
Athens, 19 July 2012
PRESS RELEASE
SUMMERTIME ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN from
R.S.I. “Panos Mylonas”
& the
Representation of the European Commission in Greece
Road safety awareness raising during summer vacations in Greece
Road Safety Institute (RSI) “Panos Mylonas” and the Representation of the European Commission in Greece continue their efforts to raise awareness and improve the numbers of road traffic accidents in Greece, occurring especially during summer time.
The specific campaign has been created to inform and sensitize both Greek civilians and foreign visitors of the country during summer time, as it is this stress relieving season when most road traffic accidents occur due to relaxation, tiredness because of swimming and nightlife, high temperatures and the bad condition of Greek provincial road network –especially in the Greek islands.
During 2011 in Greece more than 950 road traffic accidents occurred with the participation of foreign travelers, while 20% of those accidents were the cause of death of heavy injuries for road users. Specifically more than 130 foreign citizens lost their lives due to road traffic injuries. Of equal importance is the factor that most road users that were heavily or deadly injured were motorcycle riders, while car users and passengers follow. It is of great concern the fact that the vast majority of these accidents occurred during summer time.
Dissemination of campaigning leaflet (in Greek and English) is supported by the members of the “Alliance for Roads to the Future” that RSI has created with the participation of DIAGEO, GEFYRA SA, AXA Insurance Company, ATTIKI ODOS, GENESIS PHARMA, COSMOTE. The leaflet will be handed over to road users by toll booths of Aegean Motorways, Moreas and Olympia Odos and will also be available in the Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”, in the gas stations of JETOIL around Greece and the partners of GOODYEAR-DUNLOP around Greece. Additionally Traffic Police Authorities and Public Authorities from all around the country will distribute the leaflet. Meanwhile radio and television campaigns on seatbelt and helmet wearing, drink driving and talking on the phone while driving are also underway these days in all radio stations and TV channels around Greece.
RSI would like to thank all participating partners in the private and public sector, as well as individuals that help promoting road safety in our country. According to what we have seen so far, road traffic accidents is an issue that can be tackled through cooperation and awareness raising. We would like to wish to our fellow citizens to have a nice summertime and address our foreign visitors a warm welcome in Greece and in traffic with safety.
