EVENTS FOR THE LAUNCH OF THE UN DECADE OF ACTION (2011-2020) FOR ROAD SAFETY, 11th MAY 2011
 
A new programme begins for Road Safety titled “Scouting and Global Road Safety” which is an initiative of the R.S.I. “Panos Mylonas” and the Scouts of Greece in collaboration with Scouting Ireland and Road Safety Authority of Ireland (RSA) and it has been placed under the auspices of the UNECE. The program is included in the action for the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety.
 
The collaboration and planning for the programme began in the summer of 2010 and continues through the year with the official launching of the events of the Decade of Action on 11 May 2011 on a world scale. Throughout the year Scouting Communities will implement actions from a list of proposed activities that was drawn up specifically by the partner organisations.
 
The Economic Committee for Europe of the United Nations (UNECE) supports this excellent initiative, that began in Greece, and will spread across the globe where the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) has more than 30 million members in over 160 nations constituting the largest voluntary, youth organisation worldwide. The idea of programme has already been presented in important Road Safety Conferences, in Geneva, in Ioannina, in Estonia, in Turkey and most recently in Belgrade.
 
More specifically: For the official launching of the UN Decade of Action, giving emphasis on the issue of the safety and learning by doing of the children, R.S.I. in close collaboration with the Scouts of Greece and other organizations continues and strengthens its actions:
 
 
· Scouting’s Senior Section met at the 27th National Rovers Cultural Meeting (P.A.P.E.) in Piraeus between the 28/4-1/5/2011, and committed to sensitisation for road safety and the prevention of road accidents. Through the competition of 27th P.A.P.E., where the communities of Rovers were called to create television spots on the subject of the Road Safety, the R.S.I. has chosen the best spot, which will become a mean of sensitisation of the wider community with regard to the prevention of road accidents and also to promote the collaboration between the two Organisations.
 
 
• Events in collaboration with the Municipality of Pikermi of Attica on Sunday, 8th of May 2011 and Monday on the 9th of May 2011, at the celebration of the day of Saint Christopher, protector of drivers: 
 
 
o Support of award ceremony for the 5th Literature Competition on the subject “Road Accidents and thoughts on how to avoid them” that was carried out by the students of the Primary school and a speech of President of the R.S.I., Mrs Vassiliki Danelli-Mylona, on the subject “Road Safety and Youth”. It will follow a speech from the Head of Traffic Police Department of Agia Paraskevi, Police Deputy manager, Mr Athanassios Papakonstantinoy on the subject “Traffic incidents in the NW Attica”. The event will take place in the central square of Pikermi. 
 
 
o Realization of the program oftraffic education “In Traffic with Safety” of the R.S.I. for the children of the Primary School of Pikermi, from a specially trained educator in the central square of the community.
 
• Events in the University of the Aegean in Chios, on Monday the 9thof May 2011, in the amphitheatre of the University, for Middle and High School students, that include presentations of the actions, work and programme for Road Safety of the R.S.I. Moreover, the award ceremony for the Literature Contest on the subject of Road Safety will be held.
 
• On the 11th of May 2011, official day of the launching of the UN Decade for Action for Road Safety, the R.S.I. in collaboration with the Region, Municipality, University and Traffic Police of Patras and regional organizations have arrange a day of events: 
 
 
o Realization of the program of traffic education “In Traffic with Safety” of the R.S.I. for the small students of Patras primary Schools in the Municipal Park of Traffic Education “Panos Mylonas”. 
 
o The attribution of Scholarship for the best 4th year student of the Department of Mechanical engineers and Aeronautics of the University of Patras for 6th continuous year. 
 
 
·  Seminar for the parents in the theatre of “Politia” in Patras on the subject of Road Safety, with speeches from members of R.S.I. It will follow a discussion on the issue. Award the 4th Community of Rovers of Patras (Scouts of Greece)for the best television spot on the subject of the Road Safety that presented in 27th National Rovers Cultural Meeting.Scouting Ireland will join their Greek colleagues in this Global action with a Scouting Cycling Road Safety Day in June 2011 and the commencement of the distribution of 15,000 hi-viz vests donated by the Road Safety Authority of Ireland to Scouts in Ireland.
 
The Greek and Irish partners are working jointly in the preparation of a workshop on Road Safety for presentation at a Global Development Village at the World Scout Jamboree in Rinkaby Sweden in July 2011.
 
Speaking at the launch the President of the R.S.I., Mrs Vassiliki Danelli-Mylona said: “This partnership between Scouting and Road Safety is a signal project of how the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety can be made real in a global and national context and can enlist young people in making our world a safer place.”
