EUROPEAN NIGHT WITHOUT ACCIDENT, OCTOBER 16th 2010

On Saturday 16th of October 2010, the Road Safety Institute “Panos Mylonas” will be present in the biggest nightclubs.

A good idea...
On Saturday 16th of October 2010, the RSI “Panos Mylonas” organizes in collaboration with Responsible Young Driversa huge action which aims at promoting road safety, at increasing public awareness and at showing to youngsters that drinking and driving do not mix: the European Night Without Accident.

What is the goal? To meet the youngsters in their own world on their field and to directly communicate with them. This is the major asset of the European Night Without Accident.
The volunteers, all between 18 and 35, are settled outside the nightclubs, where they encourage each group of youngsters to choose a “designated driver”. The “designated driver” agrees to commit him/herself to stay sober all night long. If they want to participate, the volunteers ask them to wear a bracelet to be recognizable as a symbol of their commitment.
The concept is really simple, free and on a voluntary basis. The volunteers neither use a repressive or negative approach, nor do they use a ‘father-mother’ tone. Young people refuse those attitudes and even do not want to understand them. Participants want to underline the importance of a responsible behaviour behind the wheel.

When the designated drivers leave the nightclub, they can voluntarily take a breath analysis and/or a drug test to check if they are still allowed to drive according to country’s regulation, and therefore see if they honoured their commitment. If the analysis is under the legal limit, the “designated drivers” are rewarded with some presents offered by our partners and sponsors. If not, the volunteers encourage them to let their car on the side or to hand over the keys to a friend who did not drink any alcoholic beverage, neither used drugs.

... that spreads throughout Europe
The Night Without Accident was first launched in Belgium in 1995. Since the first action it is a great success. The public gave the volunteers such a great and positive welcome, hence RYD decided to yearly organize this action.

Since 2003, the action was extended to other European countries thanks to the support of the European Commission. In 2009, 600 volunteers were present in 200 nightclubs located in 25 countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, CzechRepublic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia and Spain. In 2010, this European event will take place in the 27 Member States.
