Presentation of the Program “Roads to Respect” by the European Transport Safety Council

Athens, 3rd of July,
PARK Hotel
The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) will present on Thursday 3 July in Athens the European project “Roads to Respect 2008”. “Roads to Respect” aims at reducing the number of road deaths on European roads through the work of committed engineering students. The presentation, organized in cooperation with the Road Safety Institute Panos Mylonas, the National Technical University of Athens and the University of Patras will take place at the Park Hotel, Athens on Thursday 3rd July at 15.00.
ETSC is the leading organisation providing an independent source of advice on transport safety matters to the European Commission, the European Parliament and others concerned with safety throughout Europe. Its key competence is the identification and promotion of research-based solutions to transport accidents and the identification of gaps in current knowledge. ETSC has currently 40 members and is the only European transport safety organization that is working together with its members on specific EU road safety policies, instruments and measures.
“Roads to respect” project was designed to raise the awareness on the importance of safe road infrastructure among the students that will be responsible for constructing the European road network of the future.
Recent studies show that poor infrastructure is responsible for one out of three fatal accidents in Europe, with particular relevance in Southern and Eastern Europe, a region where “Roads to Respect” will be implemented in 2008.
Young engineering students from Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Croatia will identify high risk sites in their home towns. After a training period in Brussels, they will present low-cost solutions to local authorities and other transport managers in order to try to convince them to adopt those solutions and treat the dangerous sites. The best students will be rewarded at a ceremony organized in Brussels during 2009.
