RSI “PANOS MYLONAS” TRAINS YOUNG SCOUTS WITH THE SUPPORT OF FIA
In the context of the “Scouting for Global Road Safety”, significant initiative that has been established by Road Safety Institute (RSI) “Panos Mylonas” and became a Global Action under the auspices of United Nations, RSI is heading to the United States with the support of FIA in order to participate at the «24th World Scout Jamboree, North America 2019» (WSJ), as a partner of World Organization of Scout Movement (WOSM). The event starts on July, 22nd and ends on August 2nd at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia, U.S.A.
 
During the 24th World Scout Jamboree, RSI will implement the BRAAVO training programme (Bringing Road safety Awareness and Advocacy to Voluntary Organizations) that is especially designed under the project “Promoting Traffic Safety Culture in Youth” which has been awarded and funded by FIA (A Transformation FIA Road Safety Grant Programme). RSI team will implement experiential road safety activities, a Research on Road Safety attitudes and behaviours, and also will demonstrate audiovisual material from RSI and FIA selected road safety campaigns, such as the recent FIA #3500LIVES. At the end of the Jamboree, a special event will take place under the title “Holding hands for Road Safety”, where a girl and a boy from each country will join hands to form a large circle and send a message for road peace, committing this way to a responsible and safe road culture in their countries.
 
The first group of RSI trainers, volunteers and members of the IST (International Service Team) from “Scouts of Greece” departed from Athens, Greece, on Wednesday July 18th. Along with RSI President, Vassiliki Danelli-Mylona, the following RSI members join the group: Manos Brouzas, Technical Manager, Fotis Thomas, trainer-volunteer, Mechanical Engineer and Cart champion, Savvas Kotridis, Hellenic Air Force pilot, and Vasiliki Plemmenou, Social Anthropologist.
 
RSI President, selected RSI staff members and trained volunteers will train, upon their arrival, other trainers from other countries so as to join our team. Altogether, under RSI’s guidance, will consist of the main body that will coordinate the trainings at the “Transportation Safety “hub in the “Living in the 21st century” area of the 24th WSJ. The purpose is to raise awareness among adolescents and young people on essential road safety principles as well as informing them about the main causes of road crashes, aiming at the prevention of road injuries which consist the first cause of death for this age group at a global level.
RSI is also a Consulting Body of United Nations at the Economic and Social Council for youth awareness and has actively participated with educational actions at previous international events of World Scout Movement (Sweden 2011, Canada 2013, Switzerland 2013, Japan 2015 and Iceland 2017).
 
The research will be implemented by RSI at the 24th World Scout Jamboree in collaboration with the Centre for Cross-Cultural Psychology, Dept. of Psychology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
