“All of us have fun, ONE stays sober…the designated driver”
Road Safety Institute (RSI) “Panos Mylonas”, with the support of volunteers, is organizing once more the event “Night Without Accidents” on Saturday, 27th of July 2019, at the restaurant- bar ASTERIA PLAGE, with the collaboration of: City of Chalkida, Region of Sterea Ellada, Regional Unit of Evia, Chalkida Traffic Police, Chalkida’s Volunteers Samaritans, Rescuers and Lifeguards Corp, Chalkida’s Scouts.
As every year, volunteers will be standing in front of the restaurant-café to inform all road users, especially young people, about the serious risks of alcohol consumption and driving and ask them to assign a “designated driver” who will stay sober and drive safe back home each one of the group. With the message “All of us have fun, ONE stays sober…the designated driver”, the hero of the night, if she/he stays sober, will be rewarded with a symbolic token. If otherwise, RSI’s volunteers would advise her/him to call a taxi and park her/his car.
In Europe, 1 in 4 road traffic deaths are due to alcohol consumption.* In Greece, alcohol is one of the leading causes of road fatalities, noticeably increasing rates during weekends at young aged drivers. However, our road behavior related to alcohol is even more alarming since 9 out of 10 Greek drivers are arguing that alcohol is the most crucial risk on road while at the same time they believe that they are still able to drive after having consumed 2,7 glasses of alcohol, the largest quantity of alcohol in Europe.**
The same event will take place on a PanHellenic scale, the third Saturday of October, in major cities of Greece as every year by RSI “Panos Mylonas” in parallel with other European cities in the context of the European Night Without Accidents.
