11th “Night Without Accidents”, “All are having fun, ONE stays sober…the designated driver”, Results
For the 11th year in a row, Road Safety Institute “Panos Mylonas”, with the dynamic presence of its volunteers, organized again this summer the event “Night Without Accidents”, with kind support of City of Chalkida, Region of Sterea Ellada, Regional Unit of Evia, Chalkida Traffic Police, Chalkida’s Volunteers Samaritans, Rescuers and Lifeguards Corp.
The event took place on Saturday the 27th of July 2019, at 10 p.m., at ASTERIA PLAGE restaurant-bar. The initiative was very successful with high response and attendance by visitors, drivers and regulars of the bar.
The purpose of the event was to inform everyone, especially young people, on underlying hazards from drink & driving and encourage them to pick a “designated driver” to drive everyone safe back home.
Having as a central message “All are having fun, ONE stays sober…the designated driver”, more than 400 drivers and regulars were informed, and more than 120 drivers, aged 20-45 years old, were assigned as designated drivers promising not to consume any alcohol and wear the special “bracelet”.
80% of the participants took breath alcohol tests while exiting the bar-restaurant. 9 out of 10 kept their promise and were found below Blood Alcohol content limit. Equally important was the fact that 45% of them not only kept their promise but also scored total zero at the alcohol test, which implies that they followed RSI advice not to drink and drive. Also, those who scored above BAC limit promised that someone else, a sober driver, would drive them safe back home.
At the event, participants had the opportunity to commit to sober driving by linking at https://www.jointhepact.com/el-gr/. Join the Pact! is an international DIAGEO campaign in collaboration with RSI “Panos Mylonas” to raise awareness in Greece inspiring both young and older drivers and road users, to change attitude on drink & drive.
For once more, the results of the event were really hopeful as they demonstrated that young people tend to adopt healthier and more responsible driving behavior compared to past generations, such as not to drink & drive or to skip driving when going out for fun, choosing alternative transportation modes.
We would also like to thank our supporters, ASTERIA PLAGE restaurant bar that hosted the event and of course our volunteers for their valuable contribution.
