The 14th Panhellenic Road Safety Week was concluded
Despite the unfavorable conditions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 14th Panhellenic Road Safety Week – which has now been an institutionalized practice in our country - was successfully held, having had broad appeal, active participation of citizens and organizations, and sent resounding messages. The event was coordinated by the Road Safety Institute (RSI) “Panos Mylonas”, in collaboration with the Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers (H.I.T.E.), and with the support of the HELLENIC ASSOCIATION of TOLL ROAD NETWORK (HELLASTRON), the Alliance for Safety and Culture on the Road: "Roads to the Future" as well as numerous other institutions and organizations.
 
From Monday March 15 to Sunday March 22, multiple informational, educational, social and institutional actions for Road Safety took place throughout Greece, with the core message for "Safety and Courtesy on the Roads”. Aim of this initiative was to inform, raise awareness, deliver training and sensitize all citizens for the prevention and reduction of road traffic crashes.
 
During the 14th Road Safety Week, the following actions, information campaigns and events took place throughout the country, in collaboration with numerous institutions and organizations:
 
 
  • "Upload a selfie" for the promotion of THIS IS MY STREET worldwide campaign coordinated in Greece and Cyprus by the RSI, as being a member of the International Automobile Federation (FIA). Photos (selfies) of participating citizens spreading the campaign message for safer and healthier daily travels were shared by the Institute’s social media throughout this week.
Among others, the Governor of Attica Mr. Patoulis, the Mayor of Palaio Faliro Mr. Fostiropoulos, the Governor of Western Greece Mr. Farmakis, and the Dean of the University of Patras Dr. Christos Bouras supporting the initiative and promoting the campaign messages -for areas where Road Safety infrastructure interventions have either taken place or are needed.
 
  • Throughout the week and until the end of April, by decision of the National Council for Radio and Television (NCRTV), TV stations broadcast 4 TV spots focusing on critical issues about the drivers’ safety: seatbelt, helmet, distraction and speed, factors which the European Commission also stresses for the prevention of road traffic crashes.
 
  • Informative discussion on Open Your Mind show by nevronas.gr online platform titled “Talking about Road Safety” (13/3). The President of RSI “Panos Mylonas” Μrs. Vassiliki Danelli-Mylona, the Paralympic athlete champion Μrs. Dimitra Korokida and the National Wheelchair Fencing Team athlete Μrs. Adamantia Zachariadi joined the forum.
 
  • Two-hour online live radio program dedicated to the Institute’s work on Road Safety in Greece and abroad, coordinated by a Swiss radio station, with the participation of Greek expats and friends and volunteers of the Institute living abroad.
 
  • Action for drivers' and citizens' information and awareness on specified areas and spots in Acharnai-Thrakomakedones Municipality (14/3). This event was held by Acharnai-Thrakomakedones Volunteers, Thrakomakedones Women’s Association and with the aid of Nea Ionia Traffic Police.
 
  • Participation of the R.S.I. President and Executives in the online 25th European Level Crossing Forum (ELCF) coordinated by the International Union of Railways (UIC) concerning level crossings safety issues (18/3).
 
  • The Online Educational Seminar for Primary and Secondary School Teachers (19/3) was held with great success and the participation of more than 330 teachers. The subject of this Seminar was “Digital Creation and Road Safety” and was coordinated by the R.S.I., in collaboration with the Educational Radiotelevision & Digital Media Department of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs. The seminar was opened by the Deputy Minister of Education, responsible for Primary, Secondary and Special Education Mrs. Zoe (Zetta) Michail Makri and the President of the Special Standing Committee for Road Safety of the Greek Parliament Mr. Christos Kellas also attended the seminar and addressed the participants.
 
  • European Day for Courtesy on the Road (22/3) The R.S.I. “Panos Mylonas” diesigned a useful bookmark with emergency numbers included and tips to promote important messages for courtesy on the road, an initiative aiming to remind all citizens that aggressive and irresponsible behavior on the road can cause road traffic crashes.
 
  • Western Greece Regional Road Safety Day (22/3) A constructive meeting was held between the President, the Vice President and the Executives of the R.S.I. with the Regional Governor of Western Greece Mr. Nectarios Farmakis and the Deputy Regional Governor of Achaia Mr. Charalambos Bonanos at the Region of Western Greece headquarters, where a memorandum of cooperation was signed.
 
In the same evening, under strong emotions, the President of R.S.I. visited the tunnel of Olympia Odos named after Panos Mylonas.
 
  • TV and radio interviews and statements made by the President of R.S.I. Mrs. Vassiliki Danelli-Mylona, the President of the the Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers (H.I.T.E.) Mr. Panagiotis Papantoniou, Secretary General Mr. Thanasis Tsianos, and R.S.I. Executives concerning the happenings within the 14th Road Safety Week at: ERT 1, SKAI RADIO, ALPHA RADIO, PARAPOLITIKA FM, The Church of Greece radio station, SKAI CRETE 92.1.
 
The R.S.I. and the H.I.T.E. warmly thank the supporters, volunteers and participants of the initiatives and actions of the 14th Panhellenic Road Safety Week  promoting and supporting the work towards increasing Road Safety in our country.
