Best Practices that Save Lives, Enhancing Road Safety

An event on "Best practices that save lives, enhancing Road Safety" was held on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at the Region of Central Greece conference hall in Chalkida by the Road Safety Institute (R.S.I) "Panos Mylonas", in collaboration with the Region of Central Greece, the Municipalities of Chalkida and Dirfys-Messapia and the International Organization “Safer Roads Foundation” (S.R.F.) of the United Kingdom.
The purpose of the event was to present specific interventions that took place on the Greek National Road 77 at the Chalkida-Psachna road in a specific area of the road network where the issue of fatal traffic road crashes is chronic and recently has been observed an increase. More specifically, pilot installations of enhanced and intelligent warning signs took place at dangerous spots of the road network and pedestrian crossings.
Representing the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, the General Secretary of Infrastructure Mr. Ioannis Xifaras addressed a greeting during the event.
Greetings were also addressed by:
- Governor of Central Greece Region, Mr. Fanis Spanos
- Mayor of Chalkida, Mrs. Elena Vaka
- Mayor of Dirfys-Messapia, Mr. George Psathas
- Chief of the Evia Police, Brigadier Athanasios Gerogiakomos who represented Hellenic Police
- President of “Safer Roads Foundation” (S.R.F), Mr. Michael Woodford
The event was presented and coordinated by the President of the Road Safety Institute (R.S.I) "Panos Mylonas" Mrs. Vasiliki Danelli-Mylonas.
The President of the Safer Roads Foundation (S.R.F.), Michael Woodford, whose initiative and funding played a catalytic role in the implementation of the project, in collaboration with R.S.I. and local authorities, made a targeted presentation on road safety projects around the world, including the recent interventions on the Evia road network.
Maria Niotaki, Director and Quality Manager of the Institute in a short presentation referred to the Institute’s educational work that, in addition to infrastructure, contributes significantly to the cultivation of Traffic Safety Culture and the improvement of driving behavior.
The event was followed by a visit of the General Secretary of Infrastructure, the Officers and the President of the Institute, to the intervention spots and specifically to Liani Ammos, in front of the Holy Temple of Evia’s Saints, where a “smart crossing” with special signage and LED lights has been installed, as well as on the Chalkida-Psachna road, where signs have been installed to mark dangerous points as well as pedestrian crossings and special speed radars (VMS).
The attendees who visited the main points of the interventions in a 4 km section of the road network, were informed about the immediate positive impact that was already observed after the installation of the traffic signage and the radar equipment.
Following the above event, on Wednesday, June 22, at the Ministry of Citizen Protection, which also houses the Hellenic Police Headquarters a meeting took place in order all relevant officers to be informed about the pilot speed management program by the R.S.I. "Panos Mylonas".
The meeting took place in the presence of the Minister of Citizen Protection, Takis Theodorikakos, the Chief of the Hellenic Police Force, Lieutenant General Konstantinos Skoumas, the Director of the Order Branch, Major General Eleftherios Garilas, the General Regional Police Director of Central Greece, Major General Spyridon Sklavos, the Director of the Evia Police, Brigadier General Athanasios Gerogiakomos, the President of S.R.F. Michael Wood, the President of R.S.I. "Panos Mylonas" Mrs. Mylonas and officials of the Hellenic Police.
During the event, a speed radar device was donated by R.S.I. “Panos Mylonas” to the Police Department of Dirfys-Messapia. The radar was received by the Commander of the Department, Mr. George Alexiou.
