Festive Nationwide Awareness Campaign for Road Safety by the Hellenic Road Safety Institute (RSI)
Festive Nationwide Awareness Campaign for Road Safety by the Hellenic Road Safety Institute (RSI)

With the aim of preventing and reducing road traffic crashes, which are currently on rise, and given the increased travels during the festive season, the Road Safety Institute (R.S.I ) "Panos Mylonas" is undertaking a series of initiatives to raise public awareness about Road Safety.

An awareness raising campaign is currently underway, featuring messages about seat belt and helmet wearing, which have been broadcast since December 15 and will continue for an entire month on the country’s television and radio stations, following a decision by the National Council for Radio and Television (NCRTV).

The awareness campaign primarily targets motorcyclists, emphasizing the necessity of wearing a helmet. With the key message, "Always Wear a Helmet", the campaign is carried out in collaboration with the National Emergency Aid Center (EKAB) and The Newtons Laboratory.
The campaign features video, radio messages, and social media content, reminding us that the best way to protect yourself when riding a motorcycle—whether as a driver or a passenger—is to wear a helmet, even on the shortest trips.

The campaign was developed based on the following:
  • The overall percentage of road traffic fatalities involving motorcycles/mopeds in Greece is 38%, while the EU average is 19% (ERSO “European Road Safety Observatory” , 2021).
  • Motorcyclists who do not wear helmets are 3 times more likely to lose their lives in a road accident (ELSTAT “Hellenic Statistical Authority”, 2021).
  • Motorcyclists are 16 times more likely to be involved in a fatal road accident compared to car drivers.
  • In 2022, 20.7% of road fatalities involving two-wheelers occurred in the 0–24 age group (ELSTAT “Hellenic Statistical Authority”).
  • Two-thirds of fatal motorcycle crashes occur in residential areas (ELSTAT “Hellenic Statistical Authority” 2024, data from 2022).
The population of individuals aged 15-30 in Greece decreased by 425,630 during the period 2010-2019 (ETSC “European Transport Safety Council”, 2021), making the need to protect young people and achieve the Institute's vision of "a world without road traffic crashes" even more crucial and urgent.

Alongside the broadcasts on the country's television and radio stations, the Institute's festive campaign on the main causes of road traffic crashes, under the auspices of the Ministry of Infrastructure & Transport, is being displayed on screens of the Real Time Network, with the support of Politis Group, located in central areas of the city.

The Institute's festive campaign aims to remind drivers that driving safely and courteously is fundamental: because the best gift for the holidays and every day is to enjoy being TOGETHER with our loved ones.
