Road Safety Institute (RSI) participated at the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Marrakech

The 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, under the central theme "Commit to Life," was successfully held in Marrakech, Morocco, from February 18-20. The conference aimed to assess the progress made in implementing the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 during its first five years and to strengthen support for the vision of safe and sustainable mobility.

The conference was hosted by the Kingdom of Morocco and organized in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Transport and Logistics of Morocco. It brought together over 4,000 delegates and road safety experts from 193 countries.

Ministers of Transport and government representatives from 100 countries attended the conference and adopted the Marrakech Declaration ("Marrakech Declaration Fourth Ministerial Conference on Road Safety: One World, One Road, Commit to Life").

The Road Safety Institute (R.S.I.) "Panos Mylonas" was represented by its President, Mrs. Vassiliki Danelli-Mylona, and the Vice President of the Board of Directors and General Executive Director of Aegean Motorway S.A., Mr. Dimitris Gatsonis. They attended the conference sessions, participated in workshops and working groups as part of side events, and engaged in various cooperation meetings and parallel events, including those organized by FIA, IRF, iRAP and others.

Given that Greece ranks among the highest ranking countries in Europe concerning of fatalities and serious injuries in motorcycle crashes, Mrs. Danelli-Mylona, together with Mr. Terry Smith, an international expert on helmet safety, co-moderated the "Head to Head" session. This session was organized by the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety as part of the Conference and the presentation of the Helmet Research and White Paper. It focused on non-certified motorcycle helmets, aiming to raise awareness about the challenges riders face in selecting a safe and certified helmet.

Beyond meetings with road safety experts, as well as past and new partners, the President of the Institute was invited to give an interview on Morocco’s public television. She shared her views on the conference, road safety issues in Greece, and her impressions of participating in the conference sessions.

The 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety holds great significance for global road safety, as this exceptionally organized event led to key decisions aimed at consolidating achievements and highlighting ongoing efforts to achieve the United Nations goal: The reduction by half of the number of deaths  of road traffic fatalities worldwide by 2030. Additionally, the Conference serves as a platform for exchanging expertise and pioneering experiences in road safety and sustainable mobility. It also provided an opportunity for all countries to benefit from modern trends, strategic plans, and action programs in road safety.

Since 2014, the Road Safety Institute (R.S.I.) "Panos Mylonas" has supported and promoted the Sustainable Development Goals by actively participating in Consultative Status with the United Nations in the global MY WORLD survey (UN Millennium Development Campaign). Through this initiative, 8,500 Greek citizens highlighted Road Safety as a key priority that should be included in the Agenda for the Promotion of Global Sustainable Development in the coming decades (https://bit.ly/32orghi).
