13th «European Night without Accidents» By Road Safety Institute (RSI) “Panos Mylonas”
34 cities in Greece sent the message: Alcohol and driving do not match!
On Saturday the 19th of October 2019, thousands of drivers and road users in general, all over Greece, were informed about the serious hazards from driving under influence, during the “13th European Night without Accidents” by Road Safety Institute (R.S.I.) “Panos Mylonas”. This important initiative aims at informing and raising awareness to drivers, and to general public, that alcohol and driving do not match! It is remarkable that every year this particular event joins hundreds of citizens, volunteers, institutional bodies, organizations, companies and an increasing number of cities and night clubs that participate, all together for a common cause: traffic safety at the Greek roads.
The event received an enormous response from all over Greece for a consequent 13th year, with the participation of 40 night clubs in 34 cities. During the event, from the preparation till the realization, more than one million citizens received the message “everyone is having fun, one is not drinking….the designated driver”. This important message that actually saves lives, was spread broadly and dynamically through 500 volunteers of the RSI network who inspired drivers to become designated driver and not drink and drive.
According to data collected from participating cities, more than 2.500 persons wore a symbolic bracelet accepting this way the challenge to become “heroes of the night”. During the night, 1.776 alco tests were performed. Sample results: 74% men and 26% women, 83% of designated drivers were under the limit (0.24). On the contrary, 1 in 6 drivers did not keep their promises, 75% men and 25% women, aging 30-48 years old. RSI’s volunteers encouraged drivers who had consumed alcohol not to drive, instead use public transports or taxi or give their vehicle to a friend of theirs who was sober.
It was quite promising the fact that this year drivers who did not consume alcohol at all (0.00) and had been committed to become designated drivers, were significant higher especially in younger ages. It is obvious that the Institute representing from 2007 in Greece the Organization Responsible Young Drivers (RYD) in combination with its educational road safety programs, have achieved a steadily increasing acceptance to a common practice in Europe, the designated driver.
The 13th European Night without Accidents was realized with the succor of Hellenic Police Force and Hellenic Traffic Police that kindly offered alcohol test devices, with the support of Regions of Western Greece, Stereas Elladas, and Peloponnisos, under the auspices of Central Mecedonia, Thessaly, Crete and North Aegean Regions and in collaboration with Hellenic Scout Movement, Patras University, University of the Peloponnese, Technical University of Crete, AUEB Volunteers, University of Thessaly and University of the Aegean. Also, Athens Public Transport Co. participated by transporting action’s message through telematics and in night transportations shift to go back safe on Saturday night.
This year’s actions were organized with the contribution of Business Union of Alcohol Drinks and of Greek Federation of Spirits Producers, kind product and services offers by Coffee Island, Elbisco, Flax, Nestlé Hellas, Tea Route and Unilever and ACS Courier Services.
This event couldn’t be successful without the energy, the commitment, and the enormous support of RSI volunteers and coordinators.
