EUROPEAN NIGHTS WITHOUT ACCIDENTS 2015 / RESULTS

Athens, October 19th 2015

PRESS RELEASE

EUROPEAN NIGHTS WITHOUT ACCIDENTS
October 17th 2015 from R.S.I. “Panos Mylonas”

24 cities around Greece took action
30 night clubs
400 volunteers

R.S.I. “Panos Mylonas” organized the event European Nights without accidents for the 9th consequtive year, on Saturday October 17th, simultaneously with other European countries, spreading the message that «Drinking and driving never go together». The event was completed with great success and panhellenic acceptance.

In Greece, the action took place in 30 night clubs of 24 cities aiming at meeting young people in their familiar hangouts, in order to come in contact with them and discuss about alcohol consumption in relation to driving. The common message was “Everyone has fun, ONE does not drink…the DESIGNATED DRIVER!” Around 400 R.S.I. volunteers were outside the night clubs, to inform people and encourage them to be the “designated driver” in order to drive the rest of the friends back home safely.

The event took place from Saturday night at 22:00 and lasted until 06:00 Sunday morning. Around 2.500 young people participated in the action and agreed to wear the special bracelet that would verify their commitment not to consume any alcohol. 30% of them were women, the majority men, and the age group varied from 20 – 40 years old. 73% of the participants agreed to take a friendly breathanalyzer test a (around 1.500 samples were received). Taken into consideration that last year’s percentage was 56%, we feel very satisfied that the Institute’s efforts to inform people about proper road safety attitudes is rewarding, and we are encouraged to continue our work with the same enthusiasm. 77% of the people – 1 out of 5 - who took the breathanalyzer test, kept their promise and were measured to be below the legally allowed limits set by the Road Traffic Code, and therefore, were given a gift. In the opposite case, we urged them to use other means of transportation, or return with other peers that hadn’t drunk any alcohol.

R.S.I. was informed by its partner Responsible Young Drivers, who conducts the same action in Belgium since 1995, that this year’s results were the best recorded ever, as 90% of the participants kept their promise and did not consume any alcohol.

It is with great pleasure that after completing our report and statistics for 2015, we observe that more people are gradually adopting and implementing safer road behaviors, and either choose not to drink when driving, or not to take their car/motorcycle when going out to entertain themselves with their friends.

It is worth mentioning that according to World Health Organization (WHO), road accidents are the primary death cause for age groups 15 – 29 years old, second for 5 – 14 years old and third for ages 30 – 44. In addition, according to recent ETSC (European Transport Safety Council) data, road accidents related to alcohol consumption, is the main death cause in the age group 16-25 years old.

The action was held from R.S.I. “Panos Mylonas” with the contribution of the Greek Traffic Police that provided the breathanalyser devices, and was supported by the Hellenic Association of Drinks Distributors (ENEAP), the Greek Federation of Spirits Producers (S.E.A.O.P.) and the Hellenic Post Courier services which helped us send the necessary material to all the cities.

We are very encouraged with the extremely positive response of the citizens in our effort to inform them and help prevent traffic crashes. The coordination of the involved parties all around Greece was complex and we would like to thank all of them: Region of Central Greece, Region of Western Greece, Scouts of Greece, Red Cross, Samaritans of Chalkida, Municipality of Lamia, BMW Central Greece Club, Municipality of Trikala, Green Ark Organization, Municipality of Amyntaio, Aegean Motorway S.A., E.KAT.O.
