The scholarship in the name of Panos Mylonas has been established under the initiative of the University of Patras and the Road Safety Institute. The main goal of ”Panos Mylonas Road Safety Institute” is the prevention and reduction of road accidents through the support and promotion of activities that relate to road safety and the improvement of driving behavior. The Institute also aims at the support and reward of the research, study and education in related efforts.
The catalyst for its foundation was the tragic loss of Panos Mylonas, a fourth year student of the Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering Department of the University of Patras and editor of the Auto Motor und Sport and Sport Auto magazines. He was killed at the age of 22 in a road accident on March 22nd, 2004 as he was driving to his University to attend lectures. He was a student of outstanding academic performance, excellent moral values, of rare talent in car journalism and with a promising future in the car industry and technology; a tragic car accident did not allow him to fulfill his ambition to contribute to society while achieving his dreams and goals. His loss has shocked the University Community.
