The catalyst for the establishment of the Road Safety Institute was the tragic death of Panos Mylonas in a car accident. Panos Mylonas was a 22-year-old University student in the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering and an editor in car magazines who respected and appreciated the real values of life; he was a person of outstanding academic performance, with excellent moral values and very talented in car journalism and technology. It is hoped that Panos’ love and respect for real values in life will be the seed so that road safety conditions will improve in our country leading to a reduction of the number of road accidents in Greece; we hope that this will be achieved through the activities based on the establishment of the Institute, the support of the founding members, the support of other organizations and companies who have expressed their intention to contribute by also becoming members of the Institute as well as through an increase in the sensitivity of citizens and relevant Organizations.
The Chairman of the Board for the Road Safety Institute, Mrs Vassiliki Danelli-Mylona, stated: “Our aim is not only to increase awareness and to raise the sensitivity of citizens, but also to mobilize all public and private bodies into action in order to alter the statistics which make Greece the leading country in Europe responsible for the highest number of car accidents resulting in the death of people most of whom are victims of a young age”.
