Meeting of the President of the Hellenic Parliament with the President of the Road Safety Institute (RSI) “Panos Mylonas”

Meeting of the President of the Hellenic Parliament with the President of the Road Safety Institute (RSI) “Panos Mylonas”
President Nikitas Kaklamanis:
“May we never again mourn a single life lost on the road”
The pressing issue of the heavy human toll from road traffic fatalities in Greece and the necessary measures to address it were the focus of today’s meeting between the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Mr. Nikitas Kaklamanis, and the President of the Road Safety Institute (RSI) “Panos Mylonas”, Mrs. Vassiliki Danelli-Mylona, who was officially received at the Parliament.
Mr. Kaklamanis emphasized that the timing of the meeting—on Holy Thursday, during the peak of Easter travel—was symbolic and deliberate. He conveyed his sincere hope that not a single life will be lost on the road again, underlining that in a country where the demographic problem consists a major issue of concern, the annual loss of hundreds of lives—primarily young individuals—not only intensifies this national chalenge but also deepens collective sorrow.
The President of the Parliament praised Mrs. Danelli-Mylona as “a woman who has endured profound personal pain and transformed it into a powerful force for good, offering valuable contribution to Greek society.” On behalf of the Hellenic Parliament, the President expressed his gratitude for the long-standing work of RSI “Panos Mylonas” in the service of the State and public welfare. Beyond the Institute’s close collaboration with the Parliament’s Special Committee on Road Safety, Mr. Kaklamanis assured that his office will remain open to any initiative that the Parliament can support in combating the scourge of road traffic crashes.
For her part, the President of RSI “Panos Mylonas” thanked the President of the Parliament for his continued support. She emphasized that road safety is intrinsically linked not only to the protection of human life but also to the demographic and social sustainability of the country. She also highlighted the Institute’s constructive cooperation with the Parliament’s Committees on Road Safety, Demographic Affairs, and Education, where the Institute has presented proposals inspired by effective measures implemented in other countries. As she noted, the RSI remains fully committed to serving both society and the State, and under the auspices of the Hellenic Parliament, it is hoped that further progress will be achieved—so that no family will ever again have to endure the sudden, tragic loss of a child raised with love, care, and dreams for the future.
According to the report with statistical data presented by the President of RSI “Panos Mylonas” to the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Greece currently ranks third highest in the European Union in road traffic fatality rates, following Romania and Bulgaria. Specifically, Greece records 61 deaths per million inhabitants, compared to 17 in Finland and Norway, and 20 in Sweden, while the EU average stands at 40.
Furthermore, data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) indicate a worrying upward trend in road crashes and fatalities in Greece during the post-pandemic period, particularly over the past two years. In 2023, a total of 646 fatalities were recorded in 10,553 road crashes, while in 2024, fatalities rose to 664 across 11,346 incidents.
