Road Safety at the time of pandemic!
PRESS RELEASE- IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

Road Safety at the time of pandemic!

Taking into account the critical period we are going through in our country, and given the following:
  1. Many of the planned educational activities for children and young people and awareness activities for students during the 13th Pan-Hellenic Road Safety Week have already been moved to a later date following the announcement of the Government's emergency precautionary measures to limit the spread of coronavirus in Greece.
  2. Citizens have reduced use of public transport (the safest way to travel as far as Road Safety is concerned) by more than 50%.
  3. It is observed that there are increased market supply needs and particular supply chain conditions.
  4. People suffer by severe stress and psychological issues due to the pandemic.
  5. Students and young people, as well as adults, continue to drive and go out despite recommendations by the Ministry of Public Health.
  6. Incidents of driving misbehavior and traffic crashes that have come to our attention.
We want to stress that as drivers and road users in general we need to be careful and responsible on the road.
Our individual responsibility for stopping the spread of coronavirus is important.
Equally important is our responsibility to prevent traffic crashes.
It is up to us to protect our lives and the lives of our loved ones!
We are already in the 13th Pan-Hellenic Road Safety Week (16-22/3) organized by RSI “Panos Mylonas” in collaboration with the Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers, the support of Attica Region, "HELLASTRON", and the Coalition for Safety and Culture on Road,  and under the auspices of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.
With a deep sense of responsibility towards the community as a whole and especially vulnerable people, we suspended all educational activities for pupils and young people, as well as all information and awareness activities. On the other hand, the issue of Road Safety is and must be a top priority, as it concerns us all, even in the most difficult of circumstances, we consider it important to promote through social media crucial messages for our safety on the road.
An excellent example are the digital creations of students from all over Greece, awarded at the 2nd Panhellenic Digital Creativity Contest of Road Safety, co-organised by RSI “Panos Mylonas” and the Ministry of Education, Dept. of Educational Radio, Television and Digital Media. Student creations will be displayed at RSI’s social media throughout the week. Please spread these messages through your own social networks too, because NOW is the time to be responsible citizens in all aspects of our lives!
RSI’s President, Mrs Vassiliki Danellis - Mylonas, said in this regard: "The period we are going through is extremely difficult and unprecedented, the challenges we face - and will face - are many and require a responsible attitude from all of us. It is the time to look not only at our own safety and the safety of our loved ones, but also at the good health and safety of the community as a whole. The same applies to road safety, it concerns us all, and it SHOULD concern us all. Because two people lose their lives on the streets of Greece every day, and many are seriously injured in road crashes. That's why 'We stay at home', but for those who need to move on the road, special attention and responsibility is needed”.
Along with our online campaigns, RSI “Panos Mylonas” in collaboration with the Hellenic Federation of Road Transports (OFAE) and with the support of HELLASTRON, designed and posted information material for the professional drivers with basic principles of safe driving. At this critical juncture, with the increased market supply needs, the aim is to support and inform all professional drivers who especially during the pandemic period are working hard to deliver essential materials and products to the whole community.
Take also note that traffic crashes are the first cause of death for children and young people aged 5-29 (Source: WHO 2018) and that victims are and will be more than the tragic account of coronavirus worldwide. So let's all help, together, with our responsible behavior on the road and by responding to the State's calls for social distancing and lockdown so as to stop the spread of COVID-19.
